Greek: 7;”

Grammatical information: pref.

Meaning: copulative prefix (a ¡qroistikÒn);

Other forms: Through dissimilation and psilosis also ¢-, which was analogically extended: ¤pax, ¡plou¢j; ¥locoj, ¢delfÒj; ¥pedoj `even', ¥bioj `rich'. A form like ¥koitij did not get aspiration because the Attic redactors did not know the word, so they followed the Ionian pronunciation (cf. ½lioj but ºšlioj)

Origin (see intro): IE [903 (902)] *sm•

Etymology: Skt. sa- (sa´-na¯man- `with the same name'), Lat. sem-, sim- (sim-plex), PIE *sm•-, from *sem in Skt. sa´m `together', Lat. sem-el usw., s. eŒj; cf. ÐmÒj, ¤ma. -- From `together, provided with' the so-called a ™pitatikÒn (intensivum) has developed, e. g. ¥-ednon polÚfernon H. It was supposed that in some cases a comparable ¢- arose from *n•-, the zero grade of *en, e.g. ¢lšgw; cf. Seiler KZ 75 (1957) 1-23; the alleged instances are probably all wrong.

Greek: ¢-

Grammatical information: pref.

Meaning: privative prefix (a sterhtikÒn);

Other forms: antevocalic ¢n-.

Origin (see intro): IE [757] *n-

Etymology: Through the loss of initial consonants (F-, s-) the original distribution was disturbed: ¥isoj (< *¢-isoj) beside newly made ¥nisoj; this led a few times to analogical forms like ¥-ozoj beside original ¥n-ozoj. In Myc. aupono /Ahupnos/, a proper name, the a- stands before h-; thus class. ¥upnoj. Also before o- the wau was originally retained: ¢Òristoj. ¢(n)- was in Greek as elsewhere originally limited to verbal adjectives and Bahuvr–his. Frisk Adj. priv. 4ff., 44ff., Subst. priv. 8ff., Wackernagel Syntax 2, 284ff., 1, 282f., Puhvel Lang. 29, 14ff., Moorhouse Studies Negatives (1959). In other languages e.g. Skt. a(n)-, Lat. in-, Germ., e.g. Goth. un-, PIE *n•-. The sentence negative was *ne, in Lat. ne-scio, ne-fas etc. (not in nšpodej q.v.). Some formations may be inherited, as ¥n-udr-oj = Skt. an-udr--, ¥gnwtoj = Skt. a´jn~a¯ta-, Lat. ignotus. If the following word begins with laryngeal + cons., Greek gets nh-, na¯-, nw- as in n»gretoj, nwdÒj < *n-h1gr-, *n-h3d-); these adjectives were again reshaped, as in ¢nènumoj; Beekes, Lar. Greek. -- Supposed ¢na- only in ¢n£edoj, ¢n£-elptoj and ¢n£pneustoj (the last two are analogical, the first may stand for ¢n-eedn-).
